back in 98 when usman was still scraping by in regional promotions nobody could’ve guessed he’d be the one to flip the script forever but then again that’s the beauty of this game isnt it you spend years banging your head against the wall and one day—boom—the whole world watches you tear apart the best welterweights on earth with a grappling clinic so sharp even the refs had to bring a camera crew
Seen it all, lads.

yeah nah mate Cageside’s got it spot on with the boom moment but i was there that night in chicago like a proper bush shitter—tickets in the nosebleed, iced tea for £7 and my mate Dave passed out when Usman stepped up but i was SCREAMING like mad when that heel hook hit cos the ref literally paused to watch it rerun on the screens O_O still owe Dave 20 quid for the ambulance back 😱

ever wondered how many blokes in newcastle were drunk on skoal and lucozade and screaming at their telly when that same heel hook played out on a dodgy itv4 feed instead of proper pay-per-view had to be the most fun wednesday night i’ve had since the barmy army turned a pub brawl into a mosh pit back in the day
Remember when the grass was greener 🌱

That choking heel hook in Chicago wasn’t just a tap—it was the moment Kamaru put the world on notice that grappling wasn’t just his game, it was his artillery. Fast forward to now, and the way this current crew moves when the cage lights hit still feels like that same precision, just with a couple more stripes on their trunks and a lot less wondering where the next payday’s coming from. Back then it was fire and hunger; Usman and those first title defenses were blood, sweat, and pounds of white tape drying between rounds because the cardio never let up. The team today? Same engine room under the hood, but the wheels have been balanced. They’re not scraping for scraps anymore—they’re choosing when to press, when to pace, when to lace the hook into the ribs of whoever dares step in. It’s the evolution of a predator who figured out patience is just another weapon. And the crowd? Still the same chaotic love affair. Only difference is instead of dodgy ITV4 static and a mate keeling over from iced tea shock, we’ve got proper production value and meme-worthy submissions that drop before the post-fight interview even starts. The magic isn’t gone—it just upgraded from rust-bucket charm to premium-grade spectacle, and that’s alright by me.
Numbers > vibes.

Yeah mate, let’s not get carried away with the nostalgia glasses on here. First off—next time someone tells me that heel hook was the “one shining moment” that magicked Usman into the stratosphere, I’m gonna need a calendar because it took him another three years of smashing knees and elbows into people before he even sniffed a belt. Three. More. Years. So that “boom” in Chicago? Cracking finish, no doubt, but it wasn’t the whole story—just the bit they keep looping on Sky Sports HQ. And ChrisBeliever—nice one for the bush shitter tale and the £20 paramedic tab, legend stuff, but the way you phrase it sounds like Usman turned that heel hook into a stage-five clinger on Dave’s metabolism. Two rounds of stalling, then the tap—fine, textbook—but us fans always conveniently forget the Welterweight division at that time looked like a lost weekend: Woodley was getting wrestlefisted by both guys wearing flip-flops, Robbie Lawler’s hands were trembling, and Masvidal was two arm-pulls away from being legally blind. A championship pedigree isn’t built on one setup arm-bar in the regional undercard; it’s forged over dozens of chins you make strangers kiss. Ultra88 bringing ITV4 static into the equation—absolute gold, and you’re not wrong about the skoal-and-lucozade bunker—still, mate, let’s level this: if Newcastle punters were the bellwether for “real fight fans,” we’d still be arguing about which round Mark Hunt KO’d someone in whilst eating a meat pie. The moment we had proper PPV, proper angles, proper replays, the magic upgraded to premium because the world could actually see the gimmick isn’t a lucky sweep from deep half guard—it’s a system. Usman didn’t survive the welterweight wars by tripping over his own jiu-jitsu; he out-thought, out-grinded, and out-wrestled opponents who were larger, faster, and morally questionable. Uncle_Since86 hitting the right notes on the evolution: the engine room’s the same four-cylinder diesel that never needed a turbo, but the suspension is now coil-over instead of leaf-spring. Still, I’ll needle the analyst for one tiny nitpick—when he says “the wheels have been balanced,” I’m reading that as “Usman’s gym is now fully stocked with rice and chia seeds,” which is lovely until Colby Covington turns up with a bucket of KFC. That cardio engine’s great, but it ain’t invulnerable to a clap trap that smells like stale chicken. Bottom line: the heel hook in Chicago was the spark, not the fireworks show. The legacy is written over time, with chipped knuckles, split lips, and a ton of boring, thankless sparring sessions no one’s filming. Keep the love for the magic, sure, but don’t rewrite history to make 2019 look like the year Usman invented the sport.
I keep my own tables 📊

Right, picture this: back in 2015 when Kamaru was still a baby giraffe in spandex, me and Dave from the gym bet 50 quid on Usman getting his head kicked in by Leon Edwards at UFC Liverpool. Fast forward to the walkout, Dave’s got a lump of chewing gum stuck to his forehead from where he slammed his own jaw shut screaming "he’s GONE!" and Usman comes out with that Muay Thai swagger like he just remembered he owns the place.
