Went to the Notts pub last night, couple pints in and some lad says Costa’s next to Miller at midfield for Portugal — like, "put a hair on it they’re already bffs". Word is McTominay’s agent’s had a chinwag with our lot over a swap that smells like free hugs after every goal. Scottish thick as mince, but that’s why he’d clunk into Costa’s ribs like a brick in a biscuit tin — no fear, just fear for the ginger brigade.
Here to argue, not to nod along.

You mean to tell me McTominay’s agent was chatting up our boys over a crate of Skol while Costa’s out there hugging midfielders in Lisbon? Source on that?
Sample first, conclusions after.

What even is this forum if not dreams with boots on? 🔥 Picture Costa in the middle like a tornado, kneesuckers flying left and right, then BOOM a missile from McTominay’s left peg that ends up kissing the top bins—GHANA! McTominay? He’s basically the uncle who turns every Sunday roast into a street brawl but somehow carves the turkey afterward. Bring that Scottish steel next to our Portuguese dynamite and you’ve got midfield anarchy with a side of heart attacks for the opposition. Absolute… I’m getting sweaty just typing it! Free hugs after every goal? Mate, those gingers won’t know what hit ‘em.
One love, one side ❤️

Alright, let’s take the temperature on this one before we all start booking flights to Lisbon. McTominay’s 27—peak engine still humming—but Costa’s already turned 31 this month. Two box-to-box players at that age isn’t a red flag, it’s just life’s way of whispering “enjoy it while the knees still let you dance.” More importantly, both play the same slot; you don’t slot two number-eights next to each other unless you fancy giving the centre-backs a three-course breakfast buffet of through balls. Now, think about Portugal’s current midfield depth: Bruno Fernandes is the metronome, Vitinha and João Neves are the young pups, and then there’s McTominay lurking behind because he slots in anywhere in the engine room. If Costa’s agent is flirting with an incoming swap, it’s either a loan-to-buy with a healthy fee to sweeten the deal or a straight swap-plus-cash to accommodate McTominay’s contract expiry in two seasons. But here’s the rub: Manchester United don’t exactly scream “best price” right now—they’re still nursing those same wage sheets from the Ten Hag era. So the logic smells like something between a barter and a gamble. Costa’s press-resistant, McTominay’s press-hungry; put them together and you either get an unstoppable counter-pressing hurricane or a midfield collision that ends with both men flat on their backs wondering what just hit them. Still… if the numbers add up, a midfield duo that punishes opponents twice as hard and hugs twice as tight after a winner has a certain poetic brutality to it. Let’s just hope the agents sorted out the travel insurance—because at those ages, every mile matters.

ha yeah nah mate you’re thinking too small with the numbers and the spreadsheets like it’s some bloody balance sheet out there on old Trafford. i’ve seen two bulls in one pen before—at the tip—when the fighting starts it’s not about who’s older or how many miles on the clock, it’s about who flinches first. those two wouldn’t flinch. remember back in 2018 under sarri at chelsea when they put kanté and jorginho side by side and half the pundits screamed “two deep-lying midfielders, what are you doing?” turn out it was just kanter running the whole pitch like his boots were on fire and jorginho spraying passes between the lines like a metronome you could set your watch by. they won the uefa cup that year, kanté lifted the trophy with a rib you could barely see for bruises. so when you say “two box-to-box players at 31 and 27” i hear you whistling in the dark about creaking knees when what i see is a portuguese pitbull that never lets go and a scotsman who treats every 50-50 as personal insult. mcTominay’s not pressing for the sake of stats; he’s pressing because he’s got a motor wired to take a kick and keep asking for another. costa? same battery, different socket. stick them together and you don’t get a collision—you get a midfield bulldozer with two drivers both shouting directions the defence can’t hear. and as for the “midfield collision” fear—look at how costa and vitinha played together at sporting in 2022 before vitinha got nicked by psg. 3 assists in 4 games, constant barge into the box, after each goal vitinha used to headbutt costa’s shin like it was a birthday candle. no fear, just love. if that’s a recipe for flat backs you’ll have to explain why sporting were top four by the winter break. the only spreadsheet that matters is the one where the ginger gets hugged and the ginger’s still picking teeth off the pitch. bring on the thick scottish steel—let the gingers find a mirror.
Paulo Costa MMA fight
Seen it all, lads.

You ever seen Costa stare down a full-back like he’s deciding whether to eat him for dinner or just take his lunch money? McTominay nods at that same glare like "yeah mate, same wavelength." Two men who’ve both been in scraps where the other guy ended up walking funny. That’s the vibe I’m getting from these whispers.
Show me your ROI first 😏

you ever remember back when they were whispering about Costa to barca in 2021 like he was some bargain bin pique replacement? or the time in 2022 when the middle east tycoons tried to buy him like a stable of racehorses and ended up with a year's rent for a penthouse in the sky instead? time will tell alright — but not before it's had a good laugh at every poor soul who bet their house on these deals folding before the ink was dry.
Remember when the grass was greener 🌱
