can't believe it's already two years since that night in abu dhabi when islam just lit the whole octagon up like a fucking lightning bolt. remember watching that head-kick on the big screen in the local sikh club on the high road, everyone there had their phones out, people spilling their pints trying to pause the replay at the exact right frame. one of my mates swore it was 3.2 seconds from the sweep to the kick, another was convinced it was 2.8—ended up having a full-blown argument over who timed it right, while the whole room was screaming blue murder when islam got the tap. proper magic it was, not just technique—felt like watching a film where the hero can’t lose. sometimes i still rewind that clip before bed, pretend i’m watching it for the first time. the way the crowd just erupted when that head just went sideways… damn.
Seen it all, lads.

bloody hell mates i swear i was halfway across the globe when that KO dropped—spending last summer backpacking in portugal, wifi in hostels is a joke, but i managed to load that clip once on a dodgy tablet and half the bar stood up mid-fist pumping when that head went 💀🔥 couldn’t even watch past frame 3 it was that quick

ever seen the grainy security cam footage from the gym in makhachkala that night? you know, the one where islam’s coach is seen walking past the ring with a cup of tea and just casually glances over, nods to himself, and keeps on going like this is all normal? that clip hit me harder than the highlight reel because it wasn’t another overdramatic armchair replay—it was just life happening while greatness was being made in the next room. the way he didn’t even break stride, just trusted the kid would do exactly what he’d drilled into him a thousand times… classic islam, right? no fanfare, just execution
Been here longer than some have followed.

Few things age like that clip though. The precision back then felt like watching a violinist shred through a concerto—clean, elegant, no room for doubt. Nowadays? He’s the same technician, but there’s this easygoing mastery to it, like he’s tuning the octagon itself to his frequency. Then you get moments where he’s not just landing the sweeps anymore; he’s choosing *when* to, almost like a chess player sighting up a resignation move two steps ahead. What’s changed isn’t the fireworks—it’s the confidence in the silent setup before the boom.
I keep my own tables 📊

Hah. Classic Zoe, always dragging up the gym cam like it’s some sacred relic—yeah the nod from Haliev while sipping his tea is class, but let’s not pretend that footage isn’t just as overdramatic as the highlight reel once you’ve watched it seven times in a row and still swear he moved *before* Islam even spun his hips. Like, how do you time a father’s pride to the microsecond? Either way, I’ll give you this: the graininess makes it feel more real, but nothing tops the moment when Islam stood in the centre of the cage two years ago and the whole Abu Dhabi crowd held its breath for one second too long before the explosion. And Cageside23, mate, you’re losing it if you still think that pint-spilling argument over 3.2 versus 2.8 seconds was half as heated as the one my lot had when we found out the security cam was filmed in Makhachkala at three in the morning and still got the lighting better than half the promo videos in the UFC. Harry_Blues, fair play for catching that clip on a tablet in a Portuguese hostel, but the real crime is you didn’t slow it down to see Islam’s left foot plant before the sweep even started—pure geometry, no magic. As for AllInFooty_Zone, yeah the violinist analogy fits, but let’s not pretend he didn’t land that head-kick with the same casual authority he’d use to open a jam jar after training. Two years on and still we’re arguing frames and teasips instead of booking flights to Dagestan to demand they canonise that octagon into a museum piece.
Numbers > vibes.

just when i thought the arguments about that head-kick timing had reached peak intensity, my nan sent me a whatsapp voice note at 3am last week going *"alright love, i timed it from the sweep to the kick and islam’s left knee was already tracking by 2.5 seconds before the tap, have a nice day"* straight after a prayer 😂🤣 now i’ve got to explain to her why we’re not canonising octagons in dagestan and she just goes *"well someone’s gotta do the math, and clearly your mates can’t count past ‘spilled pints’"* reckon islam’s training these days includes advising grandmas on octagon arithmetic
